Thursday, we headed east towards Bar Harbor and landed in Wescott State Park near Watertown, NY and right on Lake Ontario. The park was nice, electric only, $35. It had a really nice beach and marina and Renee and I decided to get the kayaks wet and go for a little paddle. Cool experience to kayak on Lake Ontario!! It was 85ish and very humid.
Up state New York is REALLY pretty. Lots of rolling green hills, fields of corn and other crops and open spaces. Nothing like you would think New York is like.
Friday, we talked about going through the Anderondack Mountains, Lake Placid, and across Lake Champlain, but when we realized the road through the mountains was VERY slow and windy, plus we would have to take a ferry ($125) across Lake Champlain, we decided to go up and around the top of Lake Champlain and bypass the Anderondacks :( We can't see everything, right? There are bridges in the upper part of the lake so that's the route we decided to take (Hwy 11).
Again we saw some pretty country, some Amish horse and buggies, and neat little old towns. We took Hwy. 11, then Hwy. 2 down between Lake Champlain, across several bridges, one of which was a draw bridge. Lake Champlain is just beautiful. Lots of boats of all kinds, fishermen, paddle boarders, sail boats, house boats, kayaks.
We are staying at a so-so park near Burlington, VT, Shelburne Camping Area, $40 with full hook-ups. We couldn't be picky here this weekend, being it's Labor Day weekend. We're looking forward to seeing a little bit of northern Vermont and New Jersey but will mostly just be passing through.
We're waiting out the Labor Day weekend before going into Bar Harbor since it such a popular get-away place for New Yorkers, so will stay 2 nights somewhere between here and there, hopefully where there is the perfect kayaking lake :) Can't wait for the Maine Lobster!!

Yes, it is such a surprise to see how beautiful that part of the country is. We didn't expect it either. Happy kayaking!!
